Student discounts on subscriptions in Canada: what is available
Short answer
Canadian college and university students can get student pricing on Spotify Premium, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium and Apple Music, each for up to four years with yearly verification, and Amazon offers half-price Prime to students and everyone aged 19 to 24. K-12 students and teachers get Canva's premium features free through Canva Education, and students with an eligible school email can use Office 365 A1, with the web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, for free.

Things to know before you sign up
- Most music and video offers verify you every year. Spotify and YouTube use SheerID; when you stop being a student, the plan moves to the regular price.
- Four years is the usual limit. Spotify, YouTube and Apple all cap student pricing at four years.
- Switching takes a step. YouTube asks you to cancel a regular paid membership before starting a student one.
- Adobe has student pricing too. Adobe sells Creative Cloud to eligible students and teachers at a reduced price; check its Students and Teachers plans page for the current Canadian offer.
- Some offers depend on your school. Canva for Campus and Microsoft's education plans exist only if your institution signs up.
If you do not qualify
Graduated, studying part-time at a school that is not on the list, or in Quebec for Spotify? A short, fixed-term plan avoids paying the full monthly price for months you do not need. The brands check enrolment at an eligible institution through their verification service. Each brand's own terms decide who qualifies, so check them before you sign up.
Do student plans renew automatically?
Yes, on the brands' own sites they renew monthly and are re-verified every year. When you are no longer eligible, they switch to the regular price.
Is there a student discount on Netflix in Canada?
Netflix does not list a student plan on its Canadian plans page. Its lowest-priced option is the Standard with ads plan.
